September 2020 Global Pesticide Grids (PEST-CHEMGRIDS), v1.01 (2015, 2020, 2025) PURPOSE To provide a global gridded data set of commonly-used agricultural pesticides crucial to assess human and ecosystem exposure to potential toxicants for environmental modeling, assessment of agricultural chemical contamination and risk analysis, and other related research at global, regional, national, and local levels. DESCRIPTION The Global Pesticide Grids (PEST-CHEMGRIDS), Version 1.01 contains 20 of the most-used pesticide active ingredients on 6 dominant crops and 4 aggregated crop classes at 5 arc-minute resolution (about 10 km at the equator), estimated in year 2015, and then projected to 2020 and 2025. To estimate the global application rates of specific active ingredients, spatial statistical methods were used to re-analyze the U.S. Geological Survey Pesticide National Synthesis Project (USGS/PNSP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT) pesticide databases, along with other public inventories including globally gridded data of soil physical properties, hydro-climatic variables, agricultural quantities, and socioeconomic indices. The application rate (APR) of each active ingredient on each crop is in kilogram per hectare per year (kg/ha-year), and the harvest area of each crop is in hectare (ha). The data set also includes 200 data quality index maps corresponding to each active ingredient on each crop, as well as maps of the 10 dominant crops and 4 aggregated crop classes. Version 1.01 includes data in GeoTIFF and netCDF formats. ACCESSING THE DATA The data may be downloaded at https://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/set/ferman-v1-pest-chemgrids-v1-01/data-download DATA FORMAT This archive contains the data in GeoTIFF and netCDF-4 formats. The data files are compressed zipfiles. Downloaded files need to be uncompressed in a single folder using either WinZip (Windows file compression utility) or similar application. Users should expect an increase in the size of downloaded data after decompression. DATA FILE NAMING CONVENTION APR_X_Y_Z_K.EXT QI_X_Y_Z_K.EXT X _HarvestedArea.EXT where ‘APR” and ‘QI” stand for application rate and quality index, respectively, X is the crop, Y is the active ingredient, Z is the year, and K is the high (H) or low (L) estimate, while EXT is the file extension. DATA UNITS For application rate (APR), the unit is kilogram per hectare per year (kg/ha-year), and for crops (harvest area), the unit is hectare (ha). SPATIAL EXTENT Global 5 arc-minute resolution (about 10 km at the equator). DISCLAIMER CIESIN follows procedures designed to ensure that data disseminated by CIESIN are of reasonable quality.
