Conventional biomes, such as tropical rainforests or grasslands, are based on global vegetation patterns related to climate. Now that humans have fundamentally altered global patterns of ecosystem form, process, and biodiversity, anthropogenic biomes provide a contemporary view of the terrestrial biosphere in its human-altered form. Anthropogenic biomes may also be termed "anthromes" to distinguish them from conventional biome systems, or "human biomes" (a simpler but less precise term). This data set is distributed by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).To provide information on global land use for research on human-environment interactions.2001010120061231publication dateAs needed-180.000000180.00000083.083332-55.750001SEDAC ThemeConservationLand UseRemote SensingSustainabilityData GranularityContinentGlobalISO TopicBiotaEnvironmentImagery/Base Maps/Earth CoverSocietyGCMD Science Keywords, Version 8.6EARTH SCIENCE > BIOSPHERE > ECOSYSTEMS > ANTHROPOGENIC/HUMAN INFLUENCED ECOSYSTEMSCIESIN Location Terms, Version 3.1AfricaAsiaEuropeGlobalNorth AmericaOceaniaSouth AmericaNoneUsers are free to use, copy, distribute, transmit, and adapt the work for commercial and non-commercial purposes, without restriction, as long as clear attribution of the source is provided.NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC)mailing and physical address

1. Population density data (Landscan 2005; 30 arc second resolution)
2. Land use (percent areaa of pasture, crops, irrigation and rice Siebert et al 2005)
3. Land cover (percent area of trees and bare earth; 15 arc second resolution; Hansen et al 2003)
Processing steps:
1. Separate "anthropogenic" from "wild" cells based on presence of human populations, crops or pastures
2. Two-step cluster analyses to stratify anthropogenic and wild cells into various biomes using cluster analysis.
3. Stratification based on population density classes (dense, residential, populated and remote based on their non-urban population density, percent urban area, pasture, crops, irrigated, rice, trees and bare earth.
4. Describe and label clusters into 18 broad anthropogenic biome classes.RasterGrid Cell166643201false0.0833300.083330Decimal degreesWGS84WGS846378137.000000298.257224Anthropogenic Biomes of the World , version 1 DIST1NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC)mailing and physical address
