Description:
Abstract:
The Anthropogenic Biomes of the World, Version 2: 2000 data set describes anthropogenic transformations within the terrestrial biosphere caused by sustained direct human interaction with ecosystems, including agriculture and urbanization circa 2000. Potential natural vegetation biomes, such as tropical rainforests or grasslands, are based on global vegetation patterns related to climate and geology. Anthropogenic transformation within each biome is approximated using population density, agricultural intensity (cropland and pasture) and urbanization. This data set is part of a time series for the years 1700, 1800, 1900, and 2000 that provides global patterns of historical transformation of the terrestrial biosphere during the Industrial Revolution.
Purpose: To provide information on anthropogenic transformation of the biosphere circa 2000 for global land use studies and research on human-environment interactions.

Lineage:
Process Step:
Process Description:
1. Aggregate the potential natural vegetation dataset by Ramankutty & Foley (1999) from 15 to 12 land cover classes.
2. Use Historical Dataset on Human Environment (HYDE) global data for human population density and percentage cover by urban, crop and pasture lands for the year 2000 were used to classify the land terrestrial areas into the different anthrome classes.
3. Stratify the population density data into 6 density classes, namely, urban, > 2500 persons per sq. km; dense, > 100 persons per sq. km; residential, 10-100 persons per sq. km; populated, 1-10 persons per sq. km; remote, < 1 person sq. km; wild, 0 persons per sq. km.
4. Apply a sequence of classification thresholds to the natural vegetation data for land area covered by urban settlements, rice, irrigated and rainfed crops and pastures.
