Description:
Abstract:
The Global Mangrove Forests Distribution, 2000 data set is a compilation of the extent of mangroves forests from the Global Land Survey and the Landsat archive with hybrid supervised and unsupervised digital image classification techniques. The data are available at 30-m spatial resolution. The total area of mangroves in the year 2000 was estimated at 137,760 km2 in 118 countries and territories in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world.
Purpose:
To provide data that can be used in global mangrove forest distribution modeling, land cover change analysis, global carbon accounting studies and to assist with policy-making in regards to human-environment interactions and future adaptive strategies.

Lineage:
Process Step:
Process Description:
The mangrove forests distribution data set was created using a multi-stage empirical process based on the following data sets:
1. Global Land Survey data for 2000, a global dataset of Landsat 30-m resolution satellite imagery prepared in partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in support of the U.S. Climate Change Science Program (CCSP), Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and the NASA Land-Cover and Land-Use Change (LCLUC) Program gathered from 1997 to 2000
2. Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery from the USGS archive.
3. Statistical data from the global mangrove database (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations [FAO], 2007) and national and local mangrove databases.
Process Steps:
1. Satellite images were subset to include areas where mangrove forest is likely to occur and exclude large areas where mangrove forests are not located.
2. Analysis of about a thousand Landsat scenes using hybrid supervised and unsupervised digital image classification techniques including geometric correction to improve geo-location and image normalization for variation in solar angle and earth-sun distance.
3. Water bodies were mapped with a supervised classification.
4. Use ISODATA clustering algorithm within ERDAS IMAGINE to generate 50-150 spectral clusters at the 99% convergence level.
5. Through iterative labelling, mangrove classes were identified and labeled with reference to field data and high-resolution QuickBird and IKONOS imagery, and then merged into a single mangrove category.
6. Four land-cover classes were generated: mangrove, non-mangrove, barren lands and water bodies.
7. Post-classification editing such as `recoding? was performed to remove obvious errors.
8. Qualitative validation was performed with the help of local experts and high-resolution satellite data such as QuickBird and IKONOS by dividing the entire area into 500 by 500 grids and checking each visually in order to identify and correct gross errors found in the classified maps.
