Description:
Abstract:
Global Earthquake Hazard Frequency and Distribution is a 2.5 minute grid utilizing Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS) Earthquake Catalog data of actual earthquake events exceeding 4.5 on the Richter scale during the time period 1976 through 2002. To produce the final output, the frequency of an earthquake hazard is calculated for each grid cell, and the resulting grid cells are then classified into deciles (10 classes consisting of an approxiamately equal number of grid cells). The greater the grid cell value in the final output, the higher the relative frequency of hazard posed by earthquakes. This data set is the result of collaboration among the Columbia University Center for Hazards and Risk Research (CHRR) and Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).
Purpose: To provide a means of assessing the relative distribution and frequency of global earthquake hazard.

Source Contribution: Provided data of actual earthquake events measuring greater than 4.5 on the Richter scale for the time period 1976 through 2002.
Process Step:
Process Description:
The Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS) provides tabular data of earthquake occurrences from 79 to 2002 that were greater than 4.5 on the Richter scale. Each occurence is georeferenced and there is a one occurrence-one record method of data collection. These occurrence records are transformed into a coverage of georeferenced points.
A 2.5 minute grid overlays the earthquake occurrence points. A frequency value is determined by summing the number of points within the grid cell. No modeling of the earthquake was undertaken to determine the earthquake's extent. The frequency range of the raster surface is then classified into deciles, 10 classes of an approximately equal number of grid cells. Hazardousness increases with decile value; 10 is the most hazardous.
Areas of "No Data" are not necessarily without risk from hazards, but may rather be an artifact of a mask that excluded from analysis those areas with a population density less than 5 persons per square kilometer and without significant agriculture.
