Description:
Abstract:
The Global Landslide Hazard Distribution is a 2.5 minute grid of global landslide and snow avalanche hazards based upon work of the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI). The hazards mapping of NGI incorporates a range of data including slope, soil, soil moisture conditions, precipitation, seismicity, and temperature. Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) elevation data at 30 seconds resolution are also incorporated. Hazards values less than or equal to 4 are considered negligible and only values 5 through 9 are utilized in further analyses. To ensure compatibility with other data sets, value 1 is added to each of the values to provide a hazard ranking ranging 6 through 10 in increasing hazard. This data set is the result of collaboration among the Columbia University Center for Hazards and Risk Research (CHRR), Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), and Columbia University Center for International Earth Science and Information Network (CIESIN).
Purpose: To provide a means of assessing the relative distribution and frequency of global landslide hazard.

Process Step:
Process Description:
Global Landslide Hazard Distribution is based upon a global landslide and snow avalanche dataset developed by Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI). . NGI's model included SRTM30-based elevation, slope, soil, soil moisture, precipitation, seismicity, and temperature. Areas were ranked from 1 to 9 (9 being highest) with regards to the propensity for a landslide or avalanche.
Since an NGI index 4 and below were negligible, these were dropped from analysis. To make the final surface compatible with the other hazard decile surfaces, 1 was added to the remaining classes (5 through 9). Therefore, Global Landslide Hazard Distribution only has a range of 6 through 10.
Areas of "No Data" are not necessarily without risk from hazards, but may rather be an artifact of a mask that excluded from analysis those areas with a population density less than 5 persons per square kilometer and without significant agriculture.
