From this web site it is possible to download CDC’s Epi Info and its shapefiles. It also provides direct links to resources for the following topics:
- Geographic boundaries
- Demographic, Health Outcome, and Environmental and Health Risk Exposure Data
- Geostatistics and Spatial Analysis
- Global Public Health GIS Projects
- Online Atlases

CDC Malaria Map Application
HealthMap brings together disparate data sources to achieve a unified and comprehensive map of the current global state of infectious diseases and their effect on human and animal health. The web site integrates outbreak data of varying reliability, ranging from news sources (such as Google News) to curated personal accounts (such as ProMED) to validated official alerts (such as World Health Organization). The data are aggregated by disease and visualized by location for user-friendly access to the original alert. Different map displays include: political units, satellite imagery, terrain, and Google Earth. The heat index markers reflect the recency of alerts, the number of disease outbreaks, and the number of sources providing information at a particular location. It is also possible to report new outbreaks. HealthMap is supported by CDC, NML, and CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) and funded by Google.org.
WHO Global Health Observatory Map Gallery
This site permits searches of the World Health Organization’s map collection by geographic location, topic, and keywords.
HIV Spatial Data Repository
As part of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) initiative to provide data for decision making and improve knowledge and understanding of the impact of HIV worldwide, the web site provides geographically-linked HIV-related data on over 50 countries for GIS mapping. It also offers a map gallery of user generated maps, additional resources, and a user forum.
HIV Mapper
The U.S. Agency for International Development’s HIVmapper is an interactive GIS mapping tool which allows users to quickly create maps based on MEASURE DHS data found in the HIV/AIDS Survey Indicators Database. Data are available for twenty countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Caribbean, and Africa at the national and subnational level. The topics covered include: HIV prevalence; Knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior; Youth; Counseling and Testing; and Other (orphanhood, birth registration, and number of injections). The indicators are primarily derived from the UNAIDS National AIDS Programmes: Guide to Monitoring and Evaluation. The database allows the user to produce tables for specific countries by select background characteristics, as well as country reports. Tabular data are available to view and export to spreadsheets. Maps can be exported for presentations and papers.
Measure DHS Demographic and Health Surveys
The U.S. AID Demographic and Health Surveys program has collected, analyzed, and disseminated data on fertility, family planning, maternal and child health, gender, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and nutrition. The database includes 240 surveys from over 85 countries. This site provides access to the surveys, data, and publications. It includes two tools for utilizing the data. STATcompiler allows users to build customized tables from hundreds of DHS surveys and indicators and provides quick facts and country comparisons. STATmapper permits users to create maps at the national and subnational level using the data from more than 75 countries. Mapping for Improved Health: GIS and the Demographic and Health Surveys provides a good summary of the data and mapping tools.
