Section 3: Environmental Treaties and Resource Indicators
The purpose of this section is to help you locate key
environmental resource indicators that pertain to global
environmental change issues such as:
The discussion of each issue follows the pressure-state-response
(PSR) framework, which is a convenient representation of the linkages
among the pressures exerted on the land by human activities
(pressure); the change in quality of the resource (state); and
the response to these changes as society attempts to release the
pressure or to rehabilitate land which has been degraded (response) (Dumanski, 1996). The PSR framework is used here to explain
the relationship among international treaties, key indicators (including
those derived from remotely sensed data), and national
response strategies. Each essay identifies relevant indicators, data
and data sources, international treaties, and national-level response strategies.
We used the following criteria to identify relevant indicators:
- functionality;
- measurability;
- data quality and availability of data (from remote sensing and ground truth sources);
- relevance to treaties; and
- potential to measure national response strategies
The discussion of indicators has some overlap with the set of indicators
that are available via the ENTRI query system.
Also, wherever possible, we have provided direct links to other
relevant sources of data.
