          CONVENTION FOR THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL FOR THE
                       EXPLORATION OF THE SEA
                            (as amended)

Objective
=========

     To provide a new constitution for the International Council for
the Exploration of the Sea established in Copenhagen in 1902.

Summary of provisions
=====================

     (a) The Council to promote and encourage research and
investigations for the study of the sea, and particularly its living
resources, to draw up programmes for this purpose and to disseminate
the results of such research (art. 1);

     (b) The Council to be concerned with the Atlantic Ocean and its
adjacent seas, and primarily with the north Atlantic (art. 2);

     (c) The Council to maintain working arrangements with other
international organizations (art. 4).

Membership
==========

     Open for accession to any State subject to the approval of three
quarters of the Parties.  Instruments of accession to be deposited with
the Government of Denmark.
