Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) and Resources

Projects and Groups | Thematic Guide (1995)

Welcome to the SEDAC Model Visualization and Analysis (MVA) Web service for Climate Change Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) and Resources. The MVA supports the community of researchers and policy analysts involved in modeling and assessing the impacts and policy implications of climate and global environmental change.

The Integrated Model to Assess the Global Environment (IMAGE)

Developed by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (MNP, formerly RIVM)

IMAGE is an ecological-environmental framework that simulates the environmental consequences of human activities worldwide. It represents interactions between society, the biosphere, and the climate system to assess sustainability issues such as climate change, biodiversity, and human well-being. The current version of IMAGE (version 2.4, released in 2006) explores the long-term dynamics of global change as the result of interacting demographic, technological, economic, social, cultural, and political factors.

Mini Climate Assessment Model (MiniCAM)

Developed by the Joint Global Change Research Institute (JCGRI - Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the University of Maryland)

Mini Climate Assessment Model (MiniCAM) is a partial equilibrium model of the world with 14 regions. MiniCAM is used to project energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and to investigate the impact of climate change policies and technologies for emissions mitigation. MiniCAM includes an agriculture land-use module and a reduced-form carbon cycle and climate module in addition to its incorporation of demographics, resources, energy production, and consumption.

Model for Energy Supply Strategy Alternatives and their General Environmental Impact (MESSAGE)

Developed by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)

MESSAGE is a systems engineering optimization model used for medium- to long-term energy system planning, energy policy analysis, and scenario development. The model provides a framework for representing an energy system with all its interdependencies from resource extraction, imports and exports, conversion, transport, and distribution, to the provision of energy end-use services such as light, space conditioning, industrial production processes, and transportation.

Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM)

Developed by the Japanese National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES)

AIM comprises three main models: a greenhouse gas emission model (AIM/emission), a global climate change model (AIM/climate), and a climate change impact model (AIM/impact). The AIM/emission model estimates greenhouse gas emissions and assesses policy options to reduce them. The AIM/climate model forecasts concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and estimates the global mean temperature increase. The AIM/impact model estimates climate change impacts on natural environment and socio-economy of the Asian-Pacific region.
