Thematic Guide to Integrated Assessment Modeling
Section 2: Past Integrated Assessment Examples and Parallels
Current projects in integrated assessment do not start
in a vacuum. Past integrated assessment programs and projects provide a
body of accumulated professional experience relevant to current
efforts, though admittedly with little continuity. This section outlines
two past integrated assessment projects, one of which is continuing, and
one earlier attempt to establish an integrated assessment program for
climate change in the United States that was abandoned.
- Climatic Impact Assessment Program
(CIAP)--an early attempt at integrated assessment of an environmental issue that investigated potential atmospheric impacts of the supersonic transport aircraft
- U.S. Department of Energy Program in the Late 1970s--this program developed a capacity for integrated assessment of climate change that was largely lost when the program was discontinued in the early 1980s
- RAINS Model on European Acid Rain--not an integrated assessment of climate change, but the ongoing RAINS project on European acid rain provides a strong example of an integrated assessment project contributing directly to policy-making.
The next section is Climatic Impact Assessment Program (CIAP).
