TARGETS

The TARGETS model (Tool to Assess Regional and Global Environmental and health Targets for Sustainability), the other major integrated-assessment modeling project under way at RIVM, seeks to study not just climate change, but broad issues of global change and sustainable development. TARGETS will include five interlinked "horizontal" modules representing population and health, energy and economics, biophysics, land and soils, and water. Cutting across each horizontal module will be a consistent framework representing dynamics within four "vertical" modules that describe the state and dynamics of the system, the pressures on it, the resultant impacts, and the range of policy responses. The initial version of TARGETS employs a global scale, while subsequent versions will disaggregate the world into six regions. Rotmans et al. 1994 contains a detailed description of the conceptual approach of TARGETS.
