A Dobson spectrophotometer to measure total column of ozone is available in Spain since 1975. It is placed at El Arenosillo observatory south of the Iberian Peninsula. Three Brewer espectrophotometer with the same purpose are located at the observatories of Madrid, Murcia and Izaña (Tenerife). Vertical distribution soundings are also performed in Madrid (since 1992) and Tenerife (since 1994) on a weekly routine. The majority of those stations are providing their data to the Ozone World Data Centre in Canada and participate in different international projects and programmer (SESAMES SPARC, TOR, Ozone Mapping, etc.). The Arenosillo station is managed by the National Institute of Aerospacial Technique (INTA) and those at Madrid, Murcia and Izaña by the National Institute of Meteorology (INM).
There are also groups for research on atmospheric ozone at a number of universities (Autónoma and Complutense universities in Madrid, Valladolid, Valencia, etc.)
Our groups for study and research of ozone have participated in sporadic activities taking place in thc Artanctica, either during the Spanish campaigns in summer, or in specific co-operations with differente countries during other times of the year.
A national project witll participation of nearly every institution active on the atmospheric ozone will be implemented in the near future. Scientifical research and operational goals related to radiative transference and forecasting of UV-B radiation flux on surface will be included in that project. It will also include the implementation of a network of stations measuring the UV solar radiation with fair spectral resolution (two new Brewer spectrophotometers, thus able to measure total thickness of ozone, will be available) as well as stations measuring UV on broad band.
In adition the INTA is collaborating With some institutions of India to prepare an observation campaign for the detection of OClO in the strongly convective clouds wich develop over the slopes of the Himalaya.
