Report of the Third Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers



SRI LANKA

1. Current Programmes

a. Two Ambient Air Quality stations to monitor the ground-level concentrations of ozone, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulphur dioxide and SPM (<10 um) were installed recently in Colombo, one at the premises of the Meteorology Department and the other at the city centre. A third mobile station was also aquired for carrying out air quality studies in other parts of the country. The programme is being implemented under the direction of the Central Environmental Authority.

b. A low-cost instrument for the monitoring of UV-B radiation at ground level was designed and fabricated by the Physics Department of the University of Colombo. It is awaiting calibration before commencing measurements.

2. Proposed Programmes

a. The Government gave its approval for setting up of a network of 10 Ambient Air Quality stations at the premises of the Meteorology Department observatories located in different parts of the country. The measurements will include ozone concentration. The project outline has been forwarded to the Finance Ministry to seek donor assistance. The programme will be managed by the Central Environmental Authority in association with the Meteorology Department.

b. A project outline has also been forwarded to the Finance Ministry seeking donor assistance for the setting up of a station to monitor Ozone Column Density and UV-B radiation level, at the Meteorology Department. An Officer from the Departmenrt was recently trained in Japan in this area.
