New Brunswick Provincial Cancer Registry

The New Brunswick Provincial Cancer Registry has been reporting cancer incidence since 1955. The province covers an area of 73,437 kilometres with a population of 723,900. It is bordered by the provinces of Quebec and Nova Scotia, with the St. Lawrence river to the north and the Bay of Fundy to the south. It lies between longitudes 65 and 69 degrees west and latitudes 45 and 48 degrees north. Most of the province lies below 200 metres, the highest point to the north is 815 metres.

The Registry reports malignant incidence for the entire province. Reporting data are established from path reports, Radiation Oncology Centres, cytology and haematology laboratories, as well as death certificates and autopsies. Reportable incidence was approximately 4,700 for the year 1995.

When reporting malignant skin cancer incidence, the Registry reports only one malignant basal cell skin and only one malignant squamous cell skin cancer per person per life-time. After having reported the initial basal cell and/or squamous cell skin for a patient, no further reports of non-melanoma skin cancers are reported for this patient.

In addition to the statistics reported in the annual Cancer in Canada catalogue, some statistics and data are available from New Brunswick by writing to the contact listed below.
