Earth Observatory

Presents new satellite imagery and scientific information about the Earth, with a particular focus on climate and environmental change. This section focuses on the Global Map directory, a global view of what's happening on the planet, over time.

The Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP)

The ESIP Federation is a diverse network of scientists, data stewards, and technology developers that improves access to Earth science data and information by a wide community of users, including scientists, academics, and the general public.

EOS ClearingHOuse (ECHO)

A metadata clearinghouse and order broker being built by the NASA Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) Project, which supports efficient discovery and access to Earth science data. ECHO′s main objective is to enable broader use of NASA′s EOS data.

NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD)

The Science Mission Directorate (SMD) engages the Nation’s science community, sponsors scientific research, and develops and deploys satellites and probes in collaboration with NASA’s partners around the world to answer fundamental questions requiring the view from and into space. SMD seeks to understand the origins, evolution, and destiny of the universe and to understand the nature of the strange phenomena that shape it.  The SMD goal is to use the unique view from space to study, understand, and improve prediction of climate, weather, and natural hazards. Through its nine data centers, NASA provides interdisciplinary Earth science data products, information, services, and tools to improve life here on Earth.

Global Change Master Directory (GCMD)

The NASA Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) holds more than 25,000 descriptions of Earth science data sets and services covering all aspects of Earth and environmental sciences, including Agriculture, Atmosphere, Biological Classification, Biosphere, Climate Indicators, Cryosphere, Human Dimensions, Land Surface, Oceans, Paleoclimate, Solid Earth, Spectral Engineering, Sun-Earth Interactions, and Terrestrial Hydrosphere.

Goddard Institutue for Space Studies (GISS)

The NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) is a laboratory of the Earth-Sun Exploration Division of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and a unit of the Columbia University Earth Institute emphasizing the broad, interdisciplinary study of global change.

Earth Observing System (EOS)

A coordinated series of polar-orbiting and low-inclination satellites for long-term global observations of the land surface, biosphere, solid Earth, atmosphere, and oceans. EOS is a major component of the Earth Science Division of NASA′s Science Mission Directorate, which aims to enable an improved understanding of the Earth as an integrated system by both program scientists and the general public.

The Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAAC)

Centers of the NASA Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) that process, archive, document, and distribute data from NASA′s past and current Earth-observing satellites and field measurement programs. Each center serves one or more specific Earth science disciplines and provides data products and information, services, and tools unique to its particular science.

The Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS)

Provides scientists and others access to Earth science satellite data (e.g., land, ocean, and atmosphere data products) from the NASA Earth-Sun Systems Division, and  provides tools to facilitate the processing, archiving, and distribution of Earth science data.

REVERB—Next Generation Metadata Search and Discovery Tool

A modernized browse, search, and order tool for the Eos ClearingHOuse, containing more than 2,400 data sets archived at EOSDIS data centers. Users can instantaneously filter data sets and granules by specifying spatial and temporal criteria, as well as search terms, platforms & instruments, campaigns, processing levels, and science keywords.

Reports

Assessments of Impacts and Adaptations to Climate Change in Multiple Regions and Sectors (AIACC)

A Web site facilitating  access to extensive data, software and bibliographic resources related to climate impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability across multiple sectors. This resource was developed in collaboration with the Global Environmental Facility funded AIACC Program, which concluded in 2006; final research reports are available from the profile pages for each project.

National Human Development Report Catalog

Facilitates searches for disaggregated data relating to the Millennium Development Goals. A data dictionary is included.

Potential Impacts of Climate Change on World Food Supply

A major study of the effects of changing temperature and precipitation regimes and increased carbon dioxide concentrations on crop production and its economic implications.  Because the data set has been superseded by a new data set, this Web site is for reference only.

Poverty Atlas

An atlas (available in PDF) of 21 full-page poverty  maps of different continent and countries, depicting small area estimates of vital development indicators at high-resolution. Causal patterns are revealed and  practical examples provided of how the data and tools have been used, and may be used, in applied decisions and poverty interventions.

Networks

World Data Center for Human Interactions in the Environment (WDC)

Promotes the development, dissemination, and preservation of high-quality global data sets related to population, sustainability, poverty, health, hazards, conservation, governance, and climate.

Polar Information Commons (PIC)

The vision of the Polar Information Commons (PIC) is of an open, virtual repository to foster the sharing of  vital scientific data and information fostering innovation and improved scientific understanding of the polar regions.

Population-Environment Research Network (PERN)

A network which seeks to advance academic research on population and the environment by promoting online scientific exchange among researchers from social and natural science disciplines worldwide.

Data Distribution Centre (DDC) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Provides access to baseline and scenario data related to population, economic development, technology, and natural resources for use in climate impact assessments.

Remote Sensing

Urban Remote Sensing Resources

A compilation of SEDAC-sponsored and other publications and reports  focusing on remote sensing applications in urban areas, as well as providing links to useful resources.

Remote Sensing and Environmental Treaties: Building More Effective Linkages

Reports, publications, and information related to the worksho on Remote Sensing and Environmental Treaties: Building More Effective Linkages held December 2000 at the Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington, D.C.

Remote Sensing Technologies for Ecosystem Management Treaties

A project focused on the utilization of satellite remote sensing data to improve the effectiveness of ecosystem-oriented multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), with a focused case study on a Ramsar Wetland and Man and Biosphere Reserve that straddles the Brazil-Uruguay border.
