Data downloads are grouped below by income group, lending categories, and regions/sub-regions/individual countries. The data are available in Geodatabase (.gdb) and CSV formats. Note: The download file size ranges from less than 10 MB to slightly over 1 GB. Values can be extracted from the data files via coding methods such as R and Python and by using Excel Pivot Tables. Information and links to Pivot Table tutorials are available in the documentation. For those without an ArcGIS license, the open source Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL) provides a driver for working with file geodatabases (https://gdal.org/drivers/vector/filegdb.html). R users can reference the RGDAL package (https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/rgdal/index.html).

Income Groups: For operational and analytical purposes, economies are divided among income groups. For the period July 2019 to June 2020, income groups according to 2018 gross national income (GNI) per capita, calculated using the World Bank Atlas method, are: low income, $1,025 or less; lower middle income, $1,026 - $3,995; upper middle income, $3,996 - $12,375; and high income, $12,375 or more.

Lending Category: Economies are divided into IDA, IBRD, and Blend countries based on the operational policies of the World Bank. International Development Association (IDA) countries are those with per capita incomes of $1,175 or less that lack the financial ability to borrow from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). IDA credits are deeply concessional—interest-free loans and grants for programs aimed at boosting economic growth and improving living conditions. IBRD loans are noncessional. Blend countries are eligible for IDA credits because of their low per capita incomes but are also eligible for IBRD because they are financially creditworthy.

Geographical Regions (Geo Regions): The geographical regions used by the United Nations Statistics Division in its publications and databases. Each country is shown in one region only. Geo Regions refer to the UN’s macro geographical regions, and correspond as closely as possible to continents.

Geographical Subregions: The UN's macro geographical groupings (Geo Regions) are subdivided into more detailed sub-regions. From the UN: “The assignment of countries or areas to specific groupings is for statistical convenience and does not imply any assumption regarding political or other affiliation of countries or territories by the United Nations.”
